New Writing North was founded in 1996 and is the development agency for creative writing and reading based in Newcastle and operating across the north of England. As a National Portfolio Organisation of Arts Council England, New Writing North works with writers to develop career New Writing Northopportunities, identify and develop talent, commission projects and residencies, and  produce publications, festivals and events, we also work with young people outside schools, and with teachers and pupils in schools. Some key strands of work include the Northern Writers Awards, which have supported over 150 writers since they were established in 2000, Read Regional, a literary tour of northern libraries by northern authors, programming the Durham Book Festival for Durham County Council, and the Cuckoo Young Writers programme, which includes a network of young writers groups, a literary magazine and an arts journalism strand for young people aged 14 – 23.
